KICKSTARTING THE L & D JOURNEY IN THE COSMETIC INDUSTRY - UNCOVERING THE PATH TO EXCELLENCE
A learning organization culture is a corporate environment that actively promotes and supports the ongoing development of employee's knowledge, skills, and creativity. This culture encourages continuous learning and innovation as key components of the organizational strategy. In the learning organization, the members, employed at all levels are provided with the opportunities to learn and lead to improvements in their career prospects. It is comprehensively understood that when the members of the organization are engaged in employment opportunities, they need to get engaged in learning continuously. [1]
Learning and Development (L&D) in the cosmetic industry is influenced by several systems and factors. These systems are integral in ensuring that employees are continuously updated with the latest knowledge, skills, and trends necessary for innovation and competitiveness in the industry.
BEGIN BY IDENTIFYING THE LEARNING GAP
Learning needs evaluation is typically described as the process of identifying the gap between current knowledge or skills and the desired level of competency. This gap analysis helps determine what training or development is necessary to bridge this gap, as illustrated in Figure 1[2].
Figure 1: Identification of the Learning Gap
Henderson's methods for identifying learning gaps focus on a systematic approach to assess and address skill deficiencies and developmental needs in the organization. [3]
Here are Henderson’s effective techniques to pinpoint learning gaps in the cosmetic industry:
1. Conduct Comprehensive Skills Assessments
- Employee Surveys and Interviews: Engage with the team directly to understand their strengths and areas needing improvement.
- Self-Assessment Tools [4]: Encourage employees to evaluate their own competencies and identify development needs.

Figure 3: Summary of self-evaluation examines performance in four areas: PDCA, Process, People and Purpose
- Managerial Insights: Use feedback from supervisors to gain an external perspective on performance and potential gaps.
2. Analyze Performance Metrics
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) [6]: Review metrics related to productivity, sales, and customer satisfaction to spot underperformance.

- Quality Control Reports: Examine data on product quality and compliance to identify technical skill gaps.
3. Benchmark Against Industry Standards
- Industry Benchmarks: Compare the organization's performance with industry standards to highlight areas for improvement
- Competitor Analysis: Study competitors to uncover gaps in your own team's capabilities and stay competitive.
By adopting Henderson’s approach to learning gap identification, the cosmetic industry can strategically address skill deficiencies to align development efforts with competitive goals while enhancing its overall performance in the market. This systematic approach ensures that the workforce is well-equipped to drive innovation, respond to industry changes, and boost their competitiveness to lead the Global Cosmetic Industry.
